Dear Big Sandy ISD Parents and Guardians,
At Big Sandy ISD, we are extremely proud of our students who advance to state-level UIL competition. Reaching this level is a significant accomplishment and reflects the hard work, dedication, and excellence of our students, staff, and families.
When Big Sandy ISD has students who qualify to compete at the state level in any UIL event, the following attendance procedures will apply.
Students Participating in the Event
Students who are officially competing in the state UIL event will be considered on school business and will be counted present for attendance purposes.
Students Attending to Show Support
Students who wish to attend a state-level UIL event to support their peers may also be counted present only if all of the following requirements are met:
A parent or guardian submits a request for attendance prior to the event
The student completes all classroom assignments before the competition date
The student checks in with a designated Big Sandy ISD staff member at the event
Students who do not meet these requirements will be subject to the district’s regular attendance procedures.
District Rationale
While some school districts choose to close school when a team or individual advances to the state level, Big Sandy ISD believes it is in the best interest of the majority of our students to maintain normal school operations.
We recognize that many of our families may not have the resources or flexibility to travel to state events and assume the associated costs. For this reason, closing the entire district would not best serve all students and families.
This process allows us to continue providing instruction for the majority of our students while also supporting those who genuinely wish to participate in this valuable educational experience beyond the classroom walls.
We appreciate your partnership and continued support of our students as they represent Big Sandy ISD at the highest levels of competition.
