Hey wildcats - This is a reminder that tomorrow is picture day!

Big Sandy Family, As we begin our 2020-21 Football season tonight, I just want to remind you all about how lucky we are to even be at this point. As you all know, bigger schools can not yet compete, and many other states have canceled their fall sports entirely. I believe that we have gotten to this milestone today because our coaches, students, and staff have done everything possible to keep school safe. Now we need you, our parents, fans, and other spectators to help as well. Please continue to wear a face-covering while attending all sporting events this year and practice social distancing guidelines when sitting in the stands. Schools and fans that do not follow these critical guidelines risk being sanctioned by the UIL, or if the virus begins to spread, the UIL could make the difficult decision to suspend all athletic activities once again. We are starting to see some progress regarding COVID-19. Please help us ensure that we don’t start going backward. While things are definitely not back to normal, they are much better than they were last spring. Thank you so much for your consideration. Now, LET’S GO WILDCATS! Mike Burns Superintendent

Big Sandy ISD had a wonderful first day of school. Our kids were so happy to be back and our teachers welcomed them with open arms. After being away for so long, it was great for us all to finally be back in class. A few reminders as we move forward during this unique time. While we are all happy to have kids back in school, it is important to remember that children can NOT come to school if they: 1. Live or have been around anyone who has tested positive for COVID-19 within the last two weeks 2. Have a family member (brother, sister, parent, etc) who has been sent home from school for COVID-19 or symptoms of COVID-19 within the last two weeks 3. Have any COVID-19 related symptoms (Fever or chills, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, fatigue, muscle or body aches, headache, any new loss of taste or smell, sore throat, congestion or runny nose, nausea or vomiting, diarrhea, etc). If any of these situations apply to your children, please contact the school nurse or principal BEFORE bringing them to school for more information. We are so thankful for your trust when it comes to educating your children. We look forward to many great days ahead!

You may go online to put money in your child’s lunch account or you may drop off money, during meal pick-up time, to put in their account. Students will only be allowed to charge four breakfasts and three lunches (8.00 maximum), and applicable to Paid and Reduced students only. Pick-up breakfast and lunch will NOT be provided on early release days. Please let us know if you are interested in our breakfast and lunch pick-up. This must be done at least 24 hours in advance of meal pick-up and NO LATER THAN 10:00 AM THE DAY OF PICK-UP. It is going to be a GREAT school year!!
To Our Big Sandy ISD Students, Parents and Guardians, Tomorrow, Big Sandy ISD will start school after what many people might describe as the “longest spring break ever.” On the eve of a new school year, I just wanted to take a moment to thank you for trusting us with your loved ones. Whether you are attending school in person or remotely, we are honored to be serving your kids at the start of the 2020-2021 school year. This year will be unique, and we will no doubt encounter several speed bumps along the way. I ask that you consider all of the hard work and preparation that our school employees have engaged in as the year begins. We will make mistakes, and we will change our way of doing things as the year goes on. But I’ve never been as proud of a group of people as I am our staff. They are eagerly waiting for our kids and can’t wait to start working with them. I hope you will show them the grace they deserve as we begin this challenging year. Finally, I want you to know that we are doing everything we can, with the latest guidance that we have from the state, to make our schools as safe as possible. We understand that there is some uncertainty in the coming days, weeks, and months, but we are ready for your kids, no matter how they decide to learn. I’m so fortunate to be the Superintendent in Big Sandy, and I look forward to meeting all of our kids in the coming days. I also look forward to meeting all of you as the year progresses. This is going to be a fantastic year. Let’s do this! Mike Burns Superintendent Big Sandy ISD

Hello Big Sandy Family. I know that many of you have questions regarding the start of school on August 12th. Currently, the district plans on starting school in person but also providing families the choice to attend school online. The district has developed several documents that will give you more information and help guide you in your decision-making process. The first form is a letter regarding the differences between the two types of learning. It can be found by clicking this link: https://docs.google.com/document/d/e/2PACX-1vSTatYtImrfzKG7eP9vj1TpkrjJIFaU1vPfgG-vyp0aSTWGnKCJd9SZuqjwOhZ9caVSL9iBRpiTiaLJ/pub The second link is a FAQ page that will answer many of your questions on in-person vs. remote learning. It can be found by clicking this link: https://docs.google.com/document/d/e/2PACX-1vR20w6hFd23gs3uXka9Xh0tq-8C3dK7Ehc4QuIvCNrCdsuYyb1uX_9M6pNwCNbZzyFwBOyZsq1jpntU/pub Finally, the district asks that you make a commitment to either face-to-face learning or remote learning so that plans can be made to best provide resources to all of our students. That link can be found here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdXRSRdI5dVH3nlWIJDuhzRvhbupIXguG-MPmrH_E7bPK2Big/viewform?usp=sf_link As always, thank you for all of your patience and understanding during this time. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.
Dear Big Sandy ISD (Students, Parents, Faculty, and Staff): Over the last four months or so, I’ve spent most of my time talking about navigating through the COVID crisis by uttering one phrase - “We just don’t know.” This time has been a difficult time for anyone who has a connection to our schools. Nothing has been normal, and public schools have had to pivot and change, frequently daily. Through it all, educators have answered the challenge. In about six weeks, Big Sandy ISD will start school again for the 2020-21 school year. There are still many things that “we just don’t know,” but after spending the last month working in this district, there ARE many things that I DO know: No matter what school looks like in the fall, Big Sandy ISD is full of amazing people who will love your children, and do everything they can to support them either in person or through remote instruction. Our staff misses our students. I hear it every day. We can’t wait to get back to normal, but normal might still look a little different for a while. No matter what school looks like, I can promise you that your students will be loved and cared for by the teachers, staff, and administration in Big Sandy ISD. While “we don’t know” precisely what school will look like in the fall, I do know that there is a fantastic team of people in place that have been working so hard this summer to make sure that your students will be safe. The district team is developing plans to implement as many safety measures as possible while still trying to maintain a sense of normalcy for our students. The school will look different, but we will be as safe as we can be, and we will do everything in our power to make sure your children are comfortable while with us during the school day. For those of you who will choose to keep your students at home and learn remotely to start the year, we are also working on plans that will help them learn and feel a connection to their teachers and other students as the year begins. If we have to wear masks, I can promise you that our teachers and staff will have a plan to teach students the right way to wear them and why it is important to do so. Just like we teach students how to read and write, we will teach students how to navigate the requirements of living in a COVID-19 world. If we don’t have to wear masks, our teachers will teach students the best way to social distance and use proper hygiene to ensure that they are safe when they are with us. Our teachers and staff love your kids, and we will do everything we can to keep them safe. That is one thing that I do know. Last spring, our students, and especially our seniors, missed out on so many rites of passage usually experienced during the spring. “We don’t know” what we will and will not be able to do as the year begins. But I do know that no matter what happens in the fall, we will do everything to ensure that even if events get canceled, we figure out ways to make up for it when this virus starts to go away. I DO know that none of this has been normal. Our kids are hurting. Our kids are missing their friends. And even though many might not want to admit it, our kids are missing being at school. When our students come back, we will be there for them. We will teach them, but we will also listen to them, talk to them, comfort them, and begin to feel normal again. During my first week in Big Sandy, a superintendent from a neighboring district told me that I “landed” in a great place. After finishing my first month in the district, I know why that superintendent was right. I have met some of the nicest, caring, and respectful people that I’ve ever been around during my career in public education. Almost every person I’ve talked to has mentioned positive things about our children and their role in their lives. I’m so thankful that I “landed” in Big Sandy ISD and can’t wait to meet even more of you in the coming weeks. There will be some difficult decisions ahead, and not everyone will be pleased with some of the choices that we make as a team, but I promise you we will make those decisions with love in regards to what we believe is best for ALL of our kids. This much I DO know. I also know that you will be hearing more from us in the next few weeks as things become clearer. Please pay attention to your mailboxes, our website, and our Facebook page as we make announcements in the coming weeks. Thank you so much for trusting our team and me with your kids. I can’t wait to start meeting all of them soon. Mike Burns Superintendent Big Sandy ISD

Hello Big Sandy ISD Family, The leadership team at Big Sandy is in the initial phases of planning for what a return to school in the fall will look like for our students and staff. Based on initial guidance from the Texas Education Agency, this survey is asking about different possible models for school opening in the fall. Because our guidance is preliminary, this plan is expected to evolve and change and we learn more. Your response to these questions can help us develop a plan that will allow us to open schools safely during the COVID-19 Pandemic. The information you provide to us in this survey is crucial in helping us ensure that students and staff have the healthiest learning and working environments possible. The link to the survey can be found here: https://forms.gle/NtkrhQn5GgzPUrgVA As always, the district appreciates your patience as we all learn to navigate this new "normal" together as a family. Thanks for your time, Mike Burns Superintendent Big Sandy Independent School District

Hello Big Sandy Family! Last night, the school board approved an adjusted 2020-21 Academic Calendar that will allow the district to start school earlier and bank more instructional minutes in case the need arises to close school during the school year because of the COVID-19 Pandemic. Also, since our students have been away from school since early March, getting them back in school sooner should help them get back on track academically. The first day of school in Big Sandy will be on August 12, and students will still be finished with the school year before Memorial Day Weekend (May 27). While changing the calendar this late isn’t ideal under normal circumstances, as we all know, this Pandemic has made life anything but ordinary. I appreciate all of your patience as we navigate through this crisis. As we get more guidance from the Texas Education Agency on starting school, we will continue to communicate with our community. Thanks, Mike Burns Superintendent
Just a reminder...all guests will be COVID-19 screened prior to entering the stadium for graduation this evening. Masks will be optional, but encouraged for guests. Please welcome Mr. Mike Burns as our new Superintendent. His first official day in the district is Monday, June 1, 2020. Mike Burns is entering his 19th year in education. He started his career as a high school English teacher in Malakoff ISD. After six years in Malakoff, he taught English and Social Studies in Coppell ISD at New Tech High @ Coppell, a school that used Project-Based Learning as its primary method of instruction. After four years at New Tech, Mike went back to his alma mater, UT Tyler, where he served in several roles for the Edgenuity Center, including an Instructional Coach and Principal of the University’s charter school. In 2015, Mike returned to Malakoff to become the district’s Director of Curriculum and Instructional Technology. Mike earned both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from UT Tyler and holds teaching certifications in English Language Arts, Social Studies, and Journalism. He also holds Principal and Superintendent administrative certifications. Mike is married to his wife Molly, and the two have three children. His step-son Layne McGuire (11) is entering 6th grade, his daughter Bridget (5) is starting Kindergarten, and his son Matthew (3) is enjoying his time at home with Molly before he starts school. Big Sandy High School is excited to announce GRADUATION PLANS for the Class of 2020. The Commencement Ceremony will be held on Friday, May 29th, 2020, beginning at 8:00 p.m. at Wildcat Stadium in Big Sandy. Both Texas Governor Gregg Abbott and Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath have addressed specific graduation guidelines. Due to a change posted by the Texas Education Agency late yesterday, Big Sandy High School graduating seniors will be able to keep their original graduation date of May 29th. Specific safety guidelines have been outlined for all Texas schools to follow in order to provide protection for our families, students, staff, and friends. Due to the 25% maximum occupancy required by the State, each graduate will be allowed four (4) guests to attend the graduation ceremony at the stadium. If the maximum occupancy changes prior to graduation, we will revise the number of guests. Tickets will be issued and checked at the gate. Big Sandy will be live streaming the entire graduation ceremony; therefore, we encourage those family members and friends who are considered “at-risk” to watch the ceremony remotely. Information for the live stream will be communicated to the community at a later date. The home side of the stadium will be open for seating. Please practice social distancing guidelines. Please remain in close proximity to your immediate family and practice CDC guidelines when seated near those outside of your family. The Governor recommends a 2 seat separation by family unit. The Home side of the stadium will be for the 4 guests for each graduate. In order to be in compliance with state guidelines, guests will not be allowed on the field after the graduation ceremony. All guests and graduates will have to exit the stadium as soon as the ceremony concludes. Masks will be optional, but encouraged, for guests and graduates. Restrooms will be continually monitored and cleaned throughout the night by BSISD staff members. Again, we want to send a thank you to all of our families for your understanding and patience as we work to provide a memorable commencement experience for all of our 2020 graduating seniors while ensuring graduation safety guidelines are followed. Additional guidelines will be forthcoming prior to May 29th. If there should be any graduate that is not comfortable in participating in a large group graduation, they should contact Big Sandy High School to schedule an individual graduation ceremony.
The buses will depart this morning at 10:00 to deliver meals. Each child's meal sack will include a $20 voucher to Two Rivers courtesy of Ronald L. Dart Evangelistic Association and Church of God Seventh Day in Tyler. Please remember to have someone at the stop! Thank you!!!
Thank you Katie for your amazing essay of HOPE!!! Your positive message is inspirational to us all. While Governor Abbott has closed schools for the remainder of the year, Big Sandy ISD is committed to providing you and your classmates with a memorable graduation. I just know that you and your fellow classmates who are preparing to graduate are going to do amazing things out in our world. This is an experience that will impact and shape your lives in ways that we probably can't even imagine yet...BUT... I am so confident that you will take this experience and strive to make this world a better place!!! We love you all and are so incredibly proud of each of you!!! And...yes..."Our hearts beat strong for the blue and gold!!!" Following is Katie's essay... Right now we are experiencing unprecedented times. Hardly anyone within a lifetime has been through something like this and it’s scary because we are left with a lot of unknowns. I have found myself looking to adults, asking for answers, but they are at a loss as well. It’s a strange feeling to be living through something that no one can compare an experience like this to. However, even though we are unsure during these pressing times, there are some things that we can learn from a time like this. There’s been many times myself, and I’m sure everyone else has wished for a week off of school or a week off from work. We finally got it and it at first seemed like a good thing. As the weeks go on we realize more and more that this isn’t what we wanted. The saying “the grass is always greener” has never been more true. If we can learn anything from this it’s that we shouldn’t wish away simple things in life like going to school, going to work, running errands, and much more because we never know how our life might turn out to be when those things are taken from us. Personally, I am going to come out of this never again taking basic routines for granted. I hope we can all come out of this living in the moment without wishing we were at another point in our lives. To the underclassmen, don’t rush through your days here at Big Sandy. Be thankful for every sport you play, every UIL event, your prom, being in a classroom, and so much more that us seniors might not get back. Just remember that nothing is a guarantee and you should appreciate everything you participate in because you have no idea if that’ll be your last time to get the chance. For my seniors, I hate that our last year together has taken this unexpected turn, but I hope it makes us appreciative that we’ve gotten to spend all these years together. I also hope that when we go back to school in May, I’m staying positive, we make the most out of our time together before we walk the stage. If I know anything, it’s that our class universally will always have a connected bond through what we’ve had to give up, what we’ve lost, and our awareness of how things you’re looking forward to can be taken in an instant. From here on, let’s live without rushing, without complaints about everyday tasks, and value the little things. If there’s any community that can come back from something like this, it’s Big Sandy. The bonds that tie us together will keep us afloat in a time like this. This is a community that won’t fall to a pandemic, won’t forget their seniors, and won’t take our routines for granted once we get them back. We are going to bounce back from this and the repercussions will shape us for the better. Let’s use this catastrophic event and make it into something positive. All in all, we need to remember that what we may think we want is not always what it seems, we need to appreciate things that may seem to be a guarantee, and we need to remember that we can and will come back from this. We will have a greater sense of gratitude and we will be thankful for the moments we get to spend together. “Our hearts beat strong for the blue and gold,” we are Big Sandy. Katie Parker, Student Council President

Governor Abbott announced earlier today that schools would be closed for the remainder of this 2019-2020 school year. The Texas Education Agency and Commissioner Morath will be providing schools with additional guidance regarding graduation and other important information in the coming days. We will continue to follow our regular school calendar and administrators will continue to work together with the staff to find ways to support our students academically for the remainder of the school year. Again, we want to thank our families for your support during this challenging time. You have all been amazing during this period of "at-home" learning!!! Please know that we are missing your children and we are committed to supporting them throughout this process. Remember...together...we will get through this.
Big Sandy ISD will once again have drop off locations for student school work today from 9:00-7:00. The drop off for elementary school work is in the north end elementary pick-up area. Secondary students should drop their work off in front of the high school. Thank you!!!
We at Big Sandy ISD are missing our students, staff, and our families so very much! As Easter approaches, we want you to know that we are thinking of you ALL! Let's be strong, determined, courageous, and have faith! TOGETHER...we will get through this! We miss you all!!!
On Monday, March 30th, Big Sandy ISD moved from providing "Grab and Go" lunches to providing meal delivery to student homes for the week. The district ran all bus routes with drivers and their helpers leaving at 9:30. Any children 18 and under were eligible to receive the meals at no cost. The district launched a telephone campaign to assist parents in completing the necessary surveys. Over 300 students received breakfast and lunch for the week with over 3,000 meals being delivered to Big Sandy families. If anyone did not receive meals this week, but would like to be added to the list for next week, please email Joan Ford at email@example.com. by Thursday, April 2nd, 2020 at 8:00 a.m. Big Sandy ISD would like to thank all of their families for their participation. Also, the district wanted to send a special "shout out" to the workers and volunteers that assisted in the successful launch of this new district initiative.
As announced yesterday, Big Sandy ISD will remain closed until May 4th based on Governor Abbott’s Executive Order. The district is committed to providing educational services through on-line resources as well as packets. Round two packets have been mailed to all families in the district that have children in Pre-Kindergarten through the twelfth grade. Packets include assignments through May 1st. Since students will miss direct instruction for a six week period, assignments are now required. This will help teachers to determine mastery of skills for our students. Beginning Tuesday, April 7th, the district will provide a “drop-off” for school work. Work may be dropped off in the container from 9:00-4:00 each Tuesday while school is closed. Secondary drop-off is in front of the high school. Elementary drop-off is in the “pick-up” area of the north end parking lot. Student work needs to be in the original envelope with the student name on the outside. We realize this is a difficult time for our families, but please know that we are committed to providing the necessary support and help to assist students in achieving success. Remember, all teachers are available to assist each school day from 7:35-3:45. Please do not hesitate to email them for additional assistance and support. Big Sandy ISD wants to send a huge “shout-out” and “thank you” to all of our families!

Please don’t hesitate to reach out to campuses on Mondays through Thursdays from 8:00-11:30 if you should have additional questions or email staff members directly. As a district, we recognize that this is a difficult and challenging time for everyone, but we are here to support and help our families as needed. Remember, Big Sandy ISD is providing lunch delivery for the week on Mondays. If you did not get signed up this week, but would like to participate in the future, please email Joan Ford at firstname.lastname@example.org. Thank you parents! You are the BEST!

COVID-19 Update from Governor Abbott’s Desk Governor Abbott, at his 12:00 press conference today, Thursday, March 19, 2020, issued an Executive Order to shut down ALL school districts in the state of Texas from midnight, Friday, March 20, 2020 through midnight, Friday, April 3rd. This means that our current school closure will be extended through April 3rd. Food service and instructional resources will continue to be provided for all students. Please check out our website for all of our resources. Go to “District Info” and click on SCHOOL CLOSURE INSTRUCTIONAL RESOURCES and you will be able to access lessons and resources from each grade level and department. Also, the district mailed these same resources to each family earlier this week to ensure accessibility. Please know that our teachers, staff, and administration are continuing to diligently work on ways that we can be of service to our families. If you should have questions, please email teachers, staff members, or administration and we will respond as quickly as possible. We want to thank all of our families for all that you are doing to help support the education of our children during this time. You are such an important partner in all that we attempt to do here at Big Sandy ISD. As always, our parents are the best! Once again, we want to thank all of our educational partners and we will continue to push out information to our families and community as it becomes available.
Hear ye, Hear ye: The Big Sandy Administration Team met today to discuss our approach to the closure of our school district. We have decided on several items that we want to share with you all. 1. At-Home Instructional Resources- We will use both high tech and low tech approaches to provide resources to our children during our closure. ---High tech approaches involve on-line programs, on-line software, etc. You can access the Big Sandy Website for more information about these topics. ---Low tech approach is to provide packets of educational materials to each child in our school. Teachers will work to gather materials to send home to each child. These packets will be mailed to the address that we have for each child. 2. The Big Sandy ISD will serve a "grab-and-go" lunch to each child, each day. These lunches need to be requested at this link: https://forms.gle/j3J3qUZaBiEPS1Tv9 There are instructions in the link for pick-up. 3. Due to the social isolation aspect of this COVID-19 outbreak, we will maintain a skeleton staff during the closure, and only those individuals that are required to be here will be. You may experience delays in return calls or you may trouble reaching someone on campus or in the Business Office. Please be patient with us during this time of closure. 4. The Texas Education Agency has cancelled all state testing for the 2019-2020 school year, so there will be no STAAR or EOC exams to be taken. The TEA is waiting on an answer from the Federal Govt on a waiver for the TELPAS exam (test for English language learners). 5. There is no organized practice whatsoever for the week of March 16-20. A decision will be made toward the end of this week for future practice times. 6. Our School Board will consider adopting a resolution to pay our employees during this time of closure. We are thankful to have a School Board that truly cares about our staff and does not want to see the staff pay affected by this emergency closure. 7. Re-opening School decisions will be made in the coming weeks. There are several considerations we have been given to take note of before we make a decision to re-open. 8. PROM WILL NOT BE CANCELLED, but it may be postponed. We are going to have a Prom for our kids, no matter what. We will have to decide what is going to be available to us at the time of the Prom. Right now, the Prom is still on as scheduled, but we may receive information in the coming days that forces us to change our date or venue. Please be patient as we work through all of these challenges. We understand the burden that this closure has placed on our families and community, but please know that we are in uncharted territory and are doing the best we can. Information will be shared with you daily, so that you can stay abreast with what we are dealing with in your child's school district. Communication is the key to all of being on the same page and understanding the decisions that are being made. Go Wildcats!
Attention Big Sandy ISD Community: In effort to continue to provide for our students and families, Big Sandy ISD will be providing lunch for all children under 18 years of age regardless of enrollment or economic status. Starting Tuesday and running all week, a "grab and go" lunch will be provided, free of charge, from 11:30am-1:00pm, at the back of the school, at the bus drop off area. Thank you for letting us serve the community during this challenging time. If you would like to have a meal prepared for your children, we have created a form just for planning purposes. Dear Parents, Staff, and All Community Members, I am writing this to you on behalf of the Big Sandy Independent School District administrators, teachers, and staff members. Over the past few weeks, we have begun the process of our children’s state testing (STAAR and EOC). Although this standardized test is used by the state to score and rank our district, this is not the end-all for Big Sandy ISD. We have a higher standard. We love and believe in our children, each and every one of them. There is no standardized test that can assess what makes each student special. Our district is incredibly blessed, and we want to thank each of you for the support you provide. At the beginning of each school year, you continue to send your children to us, so that we may educate and nurture them through their learning years, as students. We have the great opportunity to build relationships with each of them, and for this, we are truly grateful. We know that a score on an exam does not reflect the quality of the children that we serve. This single test cannot measure what we know about your child. We have students who play musical instruments, dance, sing, play sports, write songs and poetry, lead in organizations, compete at high levels, and produce magnificent works of art. We have students who work after-school jobs or care for younger siblings into the late hours of the evening. This test cannot measure when your child is kind or thoughtful, trustworthy, helpful, or when they try their hardest to be the very best they can be. I have also been witness to teachers and staff that will purchase clothing for a child in need, or place food into their backpack before they leave for the weekend, or spend numerous extra hours trying to help a child understand a concept that they just could not get in class. We have a staff that cares for our children, not only because we have wonderful educators, but we have students that are ALL worthy of such care and support. Big Sandy ISD will continue to have a tradition of excellence. That tradition starts with you. Our parental and community support is amazing. At any given school function, our parking lots are full and people continue to pour in the doors. You have supported us on all fronts, our community individuals and organizations present student scholarships, and you spend countless hours volunteering in our schools. The 2018–2019 school year has been an excellent one. It’s the cooperative effort of our students, parents, teachers, staff members, volunteers, and community supporters that make Big Sandy ISD a great school system, not the test scores on state-mandated tests. Your child’s highest potential is our highest priority. We are grateful for your unwavering support in our tradition of excellence. You and your child are what make us great. Education is more than a number, it’s about making our Wildcats winners. Go Wildcats! Sincerely, Jay Ratcliff Big Sandy ISD Superintendent
Hey Big Sandy: Kindergarten and Head Start Round-up starts today, April 25th. Come to the Elementary office to get registered! Come on Lil Wildcats!
We have a medical emergency in the Elementary parking lot for a staff member. An ambulance has been called. School will not be called into ‘Stay Put’, as this is outside in the parking lot. We wanted to inform you.
All campuses have been let out of ‘stay put’, and everyone is back to regular schedule. Stay Put is a safety protocol that we use when we have emergencies that are non-threatening to students and staff. This simply tells the students and teachers to stay in their classes and to ignore the bells. Teaching still happens as normal within the classrooms. Stay Put is called in the instance of an ambulance being called for a medical emergency.
Attention: We have a parent that has a medical emergency in the junior high office area. We have placed the school in our ’stay put’ mode, so that the ambulance can come and take care of the individual. This is normal procedure for any time that we call an ambulance.
Attention: Tomorrow, Thursday, April 18th, is a Double Day, and that means an Early Release Day for our students, at 12:18 pm. Good Friday, April 19th, is a School Holiday, so enjoy your long Easter Weekend! We will resume classes on Monday, April 22nd, at normal time! Go Wildcats!
Blood drive today from 9:00 to 1:00, in the Main Gym Foyer. Come give blood and help save lives through your blood donation(s). Go Wildcats!
Attention: Due to recent inclement weather and lightning strike(s), the light poles adjacent to the tennis courts are in disrepair. There are also large pieces of lighting on top of the poles that are simply dangling with wire. We direct all school functions to stay off of the field and tennis courts at this point, as we are requesting that Swepco come take down the poles. We will keep you updated as to when the field and tennis courts are safe to use. Thank you for attention.
Big Sandy Community: We have worked with Law Enforcement all day today, including the Upshur County Sheriff’s Department, the Big Sandy Police Department, the Longview Cybercrime Unit, the FBI, and the Texas Rangers. Law Enforcement has identified persons of interest that may have created and shared a fake Snap Chat post, in which, Big Sandy was threatened. The investigation remains open and will continue until the person or persons responsible are fully identified and brought to justice. Social media threats are all too common nowadays, but we will always take them very seriously. Law Enforcement and the School District believe strongly that we are safe to open our school district tomorrow, Thursday, April 11th, at normal time. As an added safety precaution, we will have a Law Enforcement presence on campus, to ensure safety and security within all of our facilities. Parents and Guardians, please talk with your student(s) about the negative use of social media and the potential panic that can be caused by such a short message. We thank you for your patience during this time of investigation. We also thank the students and parents that reached out to us to inform us of the threat that was posted on the fake Snap Chat post. We also apologize for such a late cancellation of school last night. We know how much of an inconvenience this could have caused for each of you today.
UPDATE: We have been working with the Big Sandy Police Department as well as the Upshur County Sheriffs Department this evening. I have also personally been in contact with the Texas Rangers. We have a lead to follow as to who may have posted this social media threat to Big Sandy. Given the time of night as well as us not being sure as to where the threat originated, we are making the decision to cancel all school classes for tomorrow, Wednesday, April 10. There will be no school tomorrow. We will be working with the Upshur County Sheriffs Department, Big Sandy Police Department, and the Texas Rangers tomorrow to get to the bottom of this social media threat. The safety of our students is our top priority! We will keep you informed as we find out more information. School administrators will report to campus at 9 AM in the morning. All other staff will not report to campus, but be available for phone calls from law-enforcement as we follow leads as to where this social media threat came from, as we may need your help.
Big Sandy Community: We are aware of a recent threat that was made against Big Sandy. We were made aware of this after 10:00 pm this evening. We thank the parents that have reached out to us. We are working diligently to figure out where the threat originated. Snapchat and Instagram fake accounts are easily created. None the less, we take seriously all threats made toward our school, even though there are 2 Big Sandy ISDs in East Texas. As we discover more details, we will inform you via text message and Facebook.
The Lockdown Drill went great this morning! Our staff and students did an amazing job! The Lockdown Drill lasted about 22 minutes, so we were ahead of schedule. Thank you for working with us to train our staff and students on Campus Safety! Go Wildcats!
Just a reminder that we will be doing a Lockdown Drill this morning, Monday, April 1st, at 9:00 am. This is only a drill. Go Wildcats!
Again, as a reminder: The Texas School Safety Center upholds the safety guidelines for each school district in the State of Texas. Each month, we undergo Fire Drills, in the event of a fire. We also periodically perform Inclement Weather Drills in the event of a weather emergency. The Texas School Safety Center also recommends that schools undergo Lockdown Drills, in the event of a campus threat or emergency. The Texas Education Code also mandates these drills to happen in each school district. On Monday, April 1st, at 9:00 am, the Big Sandy ISD will perform a Lockdown Drill, to practice our response during an actual emergency event. The campuses have informed their teachers, and we have discussed this as Administration. We wanted to inform our community, so that there is ample time to be informed of the Lockdown Drill that will take place on Monday, April 1st, at 9:00 am. This is only a drill, and no one will be allowed into or out of the building during the drill. The drill will take approximately 30 minutes. Thank you for working with us to train on how to keep our children and staff safe each day! Go Wildcats!

Hey Big Sandy: Starting on Monday, August 27th, after student drop-off is complete and school has begun, our outside doors will automatically lock down (8:00 am). The outside doors of our school buildings will all remain locked, all day. If you need to come into an office area (Elementary, Junior High, or High School), please use the call button, which is located on a bright silver box, to the right of every main entrance door. You will also notice a camera inside this box. Once you hit this call button, a front desk staff member will answer you, and you can check in with them by speaking directly to them, as they can allow you access to the office areas. This is a new feature, and one that we know will allow us to keep our buildings more safe, by not allowing anyone to simply walk all the way into our office areas, without our knowledge. This, in turn, allows us to help keep our children safer. Thank you for working with us, as we have worked diligently this summer to increase security awareness and infrastructure on all of our campuses and inside all of our buildings. Also, please be reminded that if you see a State Trooper's patrol cruiser parked at the school, we have been assigned 3 State Troopers that will frequently stop to visit our schools to help ensure the utmost safety of all of our school students and personnel. Go Wildcats!
If you have Elementary students and are bringing supplies to the school, please bring them tonight to Meet the Teacher, if you have them, so that teachers can get them checked in tomorrow. Thank you! Go Wildcats!

They will be available on Thursday, August 23rd, from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm, during Meet the Teacher.
