Big Sandy High Presents Comedy this week!
The Big Sandy High School Theatre Department will present The Last Night of Ballyhoo, a comedy, by Alfred Uhry, on Thursday, November 5th, and Saturday, November 7th at 7:30 p.m. in the Big Sandy Auditorium. Admission is $3.00 at the door. A school performance for students is scheduled for Friday morning, November 6th.
The comedy takes place in Atlanta, Georgia in December of 1939. Atlanta is hosting the world premiere of Gone With The Wind, Hitler is attacking Poland, and the German Jews of Atlanta are preparing for Ballyhoo, the social event of the season. The play takes place in the Freitag family home headed by Adoph (Jacob Mooney) and ruled by his widowed sister, Boo (Mikala Bell) and his widowed sister-in-law, Reba (Cina Shipman). Fearing her only daughter, Lala, is headed straight for spinsterhood, Boo’s goal of the moment is finding Lala a promising date for Ballyhoo. The unexpected arrival of Adolph’s new assistant, Joe Farkas, (Micah Gilbert) charms Lala but the feeling is not mutual. Joe, Brooklyn born and of Eastern European heritage rejects Lala but falls for her cousin, Sunny, (Rachel Bowers), a student at Wellesley. Luckily, Peachy Weil, (Matthew Stanford) an eligible and well-connected socialite, arrives on the scene. Through twists and turns, the family endures in spite of jealousy and prejudice amidst the backdrop of World War II. Stage manager for the production is Hannah South; Travis Menefee is Running Crew Head. The play is designed and directed by Dianne L. Salton. The play is produced by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, Inc.
