James Sky-Eagle Smith is the Director of Bands at Big Sandy ISD. He received his Bachelor of Music Education at Stephen F. Austin State University. He also graduated from Corrigan-Camden HS in May of 2000, with honors.

Prior to his appointment at Big Sandy, Mr. Smith was a middle school band director in the Lufkin ISD school district. His teaching duties included the 6th Grade low brass, 6th Grade French Horn, the 7th grade band and assistant to the 8th grade band. Under his leadership, his band received numerous awards at many competitions. Along with the 8th grade band students, the Lufkin Middle School brought back over 100 UIL solo and ensemble awards in the Spring of 2006. The 7th grade band went to UIL Concert and Sight-reading Contest and received the highest rating among all CCC non-varsity bands in Region XXI.
While studying at SFASU, Mr. Smith was apart of numerous ensembles; including the SFA Wind Ensemble, Chamber Winds, Symphonic Band and the Lumberjack Marching Band. He also was an active member of the Roarin’ Buzzsaws in 2004-2005, when he was appointed interim-director in the Fall of 2004.
Mr. Smith has along list of individual awards while in high school. A former two-time All-State tuba player, Mr. Smith also was a TSSEC Solo State Finalist and top honors at All-Region and All-Area.
In his spare time, he enjoys watching his favorite T.V. Shows (Law and Order, Who’s Line is it Anyway?), and talking to his fiance'. The band at Big Sandy performs many of his arrangements of outstanding stadium songs and jams.
