Four Years of Science!

The SBOE has voted for 4 years of science for the Recommended and Distinguished high school graduation plans. This will apply starting with the graduation class of 2010-2011. A clause was also included that supported additional funding to support this change.

It will free man from the remaining chains, the chains of gravity which still tie him to this planet. - Wernher Von Braun

Course Outlines

Both 7th and 8th grade science are integrated science courses.  Life, earth, and physical science topics are taught within the context of bigger overall themes.

In Texas, the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, or TEKS, are standards that have been enacted to ensure that all students will  receive instruction based on high standards.

The TEKS for science are based upon the National Science Education Standards and Benchmarks for Science Literacy.

The TEKS state what the students in Texas are required to know and be able to do regarding science.

Students in the 5th, 10th, and 11th grades will take the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills, or TAKS test, during the 2004-2005 school year.

A new statewide science assessment will be given in the Spring of 2006 to science students in the 8th grade. So students in the 7th grade this year will be the first to take this test next year during the Spring.

The test will cover material in the following areas:

  • Earth Science

  • Life Science

  • Chemistry

  • Physics

  • The Nature of Science

While the test will be given in the 8th grade, it will cover TEKS from 6th, 7th, and 8th grade Science.
