Big Sandy Elementary's
Dyslexia/Reading Program
Big Sandy Elementary school uses the Creative Education Institute's reading program to address the needs of identified Dyslexia students and any other student who is struggling with reading due to phonemic awareness. This program has enabled us to open the door to more students and target their needs for early intervention.
We adopted the Essential Learning System of the CEI program which is a flexible software program using a multidimensional, therapeutic approach to address the reading, language, and learning development needs of students of all ages. Our school has used this program with Kindergarten through Sixth Grade. We are excited by the progress we have seen in our students using the ELS/CEI program.
Students are placed in the program by teacher recommendation. After an assessment which checks for prior knowledge, students are then scheduled to complete lessons at their own pace. As they progress through the lessons we focus on mastery, positive reinforcement, and motivation. The computerized program features sensory integrated exercises, totally interactive tasks, individualized sequences and modifiable lessons, an automated management system, and frequent evaluations.
We were pleased that after adopting this program our students at Big Sandy Elementary made great progress in their reading skills. Students will continue to work through the program and we look forward to seeing more growth during the 2009-2010 year.
