Big Sandy Elementary's
Dyslexia/Reading Program
This year we continue to be excited about the reading program our school has purchased to address the needs of not only the identified Dyslexia students, but also any student who is struggling with reading due to phonemic awareness. This program has enabled us to open the door to more students and target their needs for early intervention.
Our new program is from Creative Education Institute. We adopted their Essential Learning System which is a flexible software program using a multidimensional, therapeutic approach to address the reading, language, and learning development needs of students of all ages.
Each student is placed in the program after an assessment which checks for prior knowledge. They are then scheduled to complete lessons at their own pace. As students progress through the lessons we focus on mastery, positive reinforcement, and motivation. The computerized program features sensory integrated exercises, totally interactive tasks, individualized sequences and modifiable lessons, an automated management system, and frequent evaluations.
We were pleased that in the first year after adopting this program that students at Big Sandy Elementary made great progress in their reading skills. Students will continue to work through the program and we look forward to seeing more growth this year.
